The Foucault Theory
Publication & Timeline
Printed on GF Smith Crane’s Lettra
Jan 2025This two-part project delves into Michel Foucault’s theories, examining the complex relationship between power, knowledge, truth, and identity. One part explores his "power/knowledge" concept in a modern context, while the other traces how discourse has shaped truth and identity throughout history. Beyond design, this project deepened my understanding of how power isn’t just restrictive but also shapes norms, identities, and realities.
Part 1: Power is Knowledge
This publication explores Foucault’s “Power/Knowledge” theory alongside key concepts like Biopolitics, the Panopticon, the Genealogy of Ideas, and Counter-Discourse. It examines how modern institutions shape societal norms, blending research with diagrams and muted geometric visuals to bring these ideas to life.
Part 2: Discourse is Identity & Truth
This timeline explores Foucault’s analysis of how discourse shapes societal labels, truths, and identities. Through a visual timeline of historical events, it maps the evolution of ideas and categorization. Muted tones and abstract typography emphasize how language and discourse continuously redefine norms throughout history.
